The Ministry of Magic is located somewhere just below the surface of downtown London. To get into the Ministry of Magic via the visitors entrance, you must locate the old shabby telephone booth down the small graffiti filled alleyway. Once you get inside the booth you must pick up the receiver and dial 6 - 2 - 4 - 4 - 2. After this you will be able to speak to the receptionist. You must state your name and business, after which you will get a small silver badge, that comes out of the returned coins slot and displays the information you gave to the receptionist. This badge allows you passage into the Ministry of Magic. You are then told, if you are a visitor, that you must submit to a search and present your wand for registration at the security desk, which is at the far end of the Atrium. The telephone booth then descends into the ground like a lift and takes you to the Atrium which is a very long and splendid hall with a highly polished, dark wood floor. The peathingy-blue ceiling is inlaid with gleaming symbols that are continually moving and changing like some enormous heavenly notice board. On each side of the Atrium, there are many gilded fireplaces. The fireplaces on the left side are for Witches and Wizards arriving by floo powder. The fireplaces on the right side are for Witches and Wizards waiting to depart by floo powder. In the middle of the Atrium stands the Fountain of Magical Brethren which is made up of a group of golden statues, larger than life-size, stood in the middle of a circular pool. Tallest of the all is a noble-looking Wizard with his wand pointing straight in the air. Grouped around him are a beautiful Witch, a Centaur, a Goblin, and a House-elf. The last three all look adoringly up at the Witch and Wizard. Glittering Jets of water fly from the ends of the two wands, the point of the centaur's arrow, the tip of the goblin's hat, and each of the house-elf's ears, so that the tinkling hiss of water is added to the pops and cracks of Apparators, the whoosh of the Wiches and Wizards traveling the floo network and the clatter of footsteps. Inside the circular pool are many Sickles and Knuts which have been thrown in by passing Witches and Wizards. The sign on the side of the fountain reads: "All proceeds from the Fountain of Magical Brethren will be given to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries".
Once at the Security desk your wand will be weighed on a balance (this tells what type of wand it is). After this we head for the for a pair of beautiful golden gates and the lift that waits beyond. As we accend we learn, from a magically projected voice, what floor we are on and what is on that floor.
Floors at the Ministry of Magic:
Level 10: Courtrooms Level 10 cannot be reached by the lift. It is a corridor with rough stone walls and torches in brackets. There are heavy wooden doors with iron bolts and keyholes. At the end of the hall is a grimy dark door with an immense iron lock, this is Courtroom 10, the place of Harry's hearing in OotP. Level 9: Department of Mysteries The walls of this floor are bare, there are no windows and no doors apart from a plain black one set at the very end of the corridor. To the left of the door is a small flight of steps to Level 10. Head: Unknown. Not much is known about this Department, they do have a room full of all of the Prophecies that have been made, in small glass balls. These paper aeroplanes are Inter-departmental Memos. Head: Unknown. Level 2: Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
Including the, Improper Use of Magic Office, Auror Headquarters, and Wizengamot Administration Services. In OotP this is the level at which Harry and Mr. Weasley got off here they walked down a corridor lined with doors, they then went through a great pair of oak doors into an open area divided into cubicles. The sign told them that this was the Auror Headquarters. They walked through here and passed through another set of large oak doors into another passage, turned left, and followed the corridor and turned right into a small dimly lit shabby corridor and reached a dead end where they found a two doors. One led to a broom closet and one had a small lopsided plaque that read Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, Mr Weasley's office. Head: Unknown Also in this Department: Magical Law Enforcement Squad: These people catch wizards who have done unlawful things but are not that dangerous. Auror Headquarters: These people catch very dark wizards who are dangerous. They are also known as Dark Wizard Catchers. Aurors go through rigorous training to be Aurors. Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office: This office keeps magically enchanted items out of the hands of Muggles, they also participate in raids to keep dark magical items out of circulation in the Wizarding world. Improper Use of Magic Office: This office's purpose is to keep wizards, underage and over, from doing any magic that they are not supposed to.
Level One: Unkown
The walls on most corridors had enchanted windows because the building is underground. The Magical Maintenance decide what weather they are getting every day. The workers had two months of hurricanes in their windows last time the workers were angling for a pay raise.
